FAQs
Is San Miguel de Allende safe?
Yes. San Miguel is one of the safest and most welcoming towns in Mexico, known for its artists, expats, and friendly locals. Use the same common sense you would anywhere. Uber or green taxis are reliable at night.
Do I need to speak Spanish?
Not at all. Most restaurants, shops, and drivers speak some English. A few friendly phrases and Google Translate go a long way, and locals truly appreciate the effort.
How do I get to San Miguel de Allende?
Most guests fly into one of three airports:
Querétaro (QRO): about 1 hour 15 minutes away, closest and easiest
León / Guanajuato (BJX): about 1 hour 30 minutes away
Mexico City (MEX): about 3½ to 4 hours away
You can book a shared shuttle for around 35–45 USD per person or a private driver for around 90–120 USD total each way. Drivers meet you at arrivals with a sign and bring you directly to the house. We can recommend trusted bilingual drivers.
Do I need a car?
No. San Miguel is a walkable city. Cafés, galleries, and restaurants are nearby, and taxis or Ubers are inexpensive and easy to find.
What is the weather like?
San Miguel enjoys springlike weather year-round with warm sunny days and cool evenings. Bring layers and a sweater or shawl for rooftops and early mornings.
What should I pack?
Comfortable shoes for cobblestone streets, casual layers, a hat, sunscreen, and a light jacket. During the rainy season from June to September, include an umbrella or rain shell.
Is the tap water safe to drink?
No. Use the large bottled water jugs provided for drinking and brushing teeth. If you run low, message Domi the house manager and Daniel will replace them.
What is the layout of the property?
Casa Avra is a duplex home. I live in the upstairs apartment and you will be staying in the private downstairs apartment. We share an outdoor dining area that seats ten people, a rooftop deck with panoramic views, and a washer and dryer. You will have your own entrance, keys, and full privacy for your home. Your home is a one bedroom with a Queen bed and a loft with a desk and yoga mat.
Is there housekeeping?
Yes. Ana the housekeeper comes Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and has a key. She will do your laundry for 50 pesos, about 2.50 USD per load. It is customary to tip her 200 pesos per week, about 12 USD, which you can leave at the end of your stay.
Is there a cook available?
Yes. Sylvia can shop and cook traditional Mexican dishes on request on Tuesdays, Thursdays, or Saturdays. She charges 100 pesos per hour, about 5 USD, plus groceries.
Is there Wi-Fi and air conditioning?
Yes. The house has Starlink high-speed Wi-Fi with excellent coverage throughout. Occasionally I receive a top-up charge of 15 USD for extra data if usage is high. If that happens during your stay, I will let you know and add it to your total at the end. San Miguel rarely needs air-conditioning. The home stays cool in summer and has portable heaters, blankets, and fireplaces for cooler evenings.
Is Casa Avra suitable for children or pets?
No pets and no children under 13 please. The home is best suited for adults and older teens.
Is smoking allowed?
Smoking is permitted only on the rooftop deck.
What are the check-in and check-out times?
Check-in after 3 p.m. and check-out by 11 a.m. We try to be flexible when possible, just ask.
How do I get around town?
Green taxis cost about 80 pesos anywhere in town and no tip is needed. Ubers are often a bit cheaper. Local buses cost 8 pesos and are safe and easy to use.
What should I know about local customs?
Greet people with a warm Buenos días or Buenas tardes. Tipping in restaurants and for services is appreciated. Ten percent is standard.
Is there noise from festivals or fireworks?
Yes, festivals are part of San Miguel’s charm. Fireworks and music are common during celebrations, especially weekends. Bring earplugs if you are a light sleeper.
What if I need medical care?
Excellent English-speaking doctors and clinics are nearby, and many offer house calls. Pharmacies are open 24 hours and close by.
